Lent

“Do you wish your prayer to fly toward God? Make for it two wings: fasting and almsgiving.”
St. Augustine of Hippo

During the 40 days of Lent, we ponder Christ’s love for us. Beginning on Ash Wednesday and ending at sundown on Holy Thursday, the Lenten season is a time of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. As Catholic homeschoolers, we’re able to integrate our Lenten devotions into our daily life. Check out these resources to teach your children about Lent, from abstinence from meat to how to pray the Way of the Cross to giving alms to the poor.

Ways to Practice Lenten Devotions in Your Homeschool

  • Decide as a family to do 40 of something–do an act of kindness for a neighbor, donate a dollar (or more) to a charity, connect with a loved one with a phone call or card, or do an act of service for a sibling.

  • Increase your daily Mass attendance.

  • Pray the Stations of the Cross with your parish family each Friday of Lent.

  • Make the rounds of nearby parishes to enjoy their Friday fish fry dinner.

  • Volunteer at a new charity this Lent.

  • Give up something that takes you away from prayer or family time like video games or social media.
